herzbube.ch is dead, long live herzbube.ch

My old homepage is dead. After many years of manually messing around with HTML and CSS text files in vi, I finally became tired of it. So I went out and installed phpWebSite. You are now looking at the result of this reincarnation.

The coup de grĂ¢ce for the old herzbube.ch site came shortly after Francesca and I had returned from our trip to China. We had decided to put up our pictures in an online photo album, and I knew that this was definitely something I could not do with any vi text file hacking. Something else was needed...

I started looking around for a software package that could help me with my task. I quickly decided that Coppermine would satisfy my requirements, and soon afterwards I had the software installed and configured and our photo album was up and running.

The ease and speed with which I had realized the online album project convinced me that I did not want to waste any more time with vi hacking. I was sure that there must be a nice tool out there with which I would be able to easily maintain my site.

My assumption proved correct: after evaluating about a dozen different packages, I felt very comfortable with picking phpWebSite. I think this neat piece of software is the best that could have happened to me: with it, web site maintenance is no longer drudgery, but has actually become something that I enjoy!

Update April 14 2006

You will have noticed that this site no longer uses the software packages mentioned above. Some of the URLs cited above will fail for this reason. I still like to retain the original story for historical purposes.
